Driving Baja: Tijuana to Cabo

Body:

The Baja Peninsula offers some of the wildest and most inspiring terrain on Earth, this is my quick guide. I have driven the Baja Peninsula from the San Francisco Bay Area to Cabo, twice, a third time I crossed at La Paz to the mainland. I have also partially navigated Northern Baja and Mexico on other occasions. If you are here looking for advice on driving the peninsula I will say it is dangerous and long. You are looking at a long three-day drive as a straight shot. But that would negate the purpose of driving the peninsula anyway, so take your time. On the next few pages are guides to key towns along the way.

NORTHERN BAJA GUIDE - - SOUTHERN BAJA GUIDE

The precious gifts that are hidden along Mexico’s Highway 1 are many. From quaint little desert towns, amazing geologic landscapes to Spanish Colonial history and even wineries, Baja offers any adventurer a healthy dose of excitement. Baja is a rugged and heartless environment and the hundreds of roadside memorials testify plenty to the rigors of driving on the Peninsula. On one trip down my father and I were held up in a rocky pass where one of the constantly present semi-trucks had gone over the edge. A pair of shoes near where the truck went over served as a temporary memorial to a Mexican truck driver.

Now that the scare-you-straight part is over, I can tell you about the gems you’ll find along the way. Headed South from the Border:
